Transformer thief wore power worker disguise

A MAN who impersonated an electricity company worker in order to steal transformers has been jailed for five years, the Yangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Zhu, wore the company uniform and carried forged official documents for the string of thefts that netted him 11 transformers worth a total of 140,000 yuan (US$22,860).

So convincing was Zhu, that crane and truck drivers he hired to unwittingly help transport the transformers never suspected that he was stealing them, the court heard.

Zhu had worked in electrical circuit installation and repairs for 12 years and is very familiar with fixing transformers, the court said.

The local electricity company found 11 standby transformers located on electricity poles went missing between August and November last year and reported it to police.

Zhu was identified as the suspect and confessed to officers.

He has returned 40,000 yuan and five transformers were later recovered.
