Trees in trouble

AUTHORITIES in Songjiang District have begun treating plane trees on Wenxiang Road that have been badly damaged by pests.
The seedlings planted several years ago were poor quality and the authorities have been fighting the pests ever since, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.
The trees have been almost hollowed out, which means they are at risk of being toppled in high winds.
The trunks are being filled with a grout to strengthen them, it said.
