Trio imprisoned in unique scheme to steal money

THREE men were sentenced to prison for taking more than 28,000 yuan (US$4,399) from passers-by on the street by enticing victims to get into their car and hand cash to them, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.

Zhu Shijiu and Xu Denian were sentenced to 10 1/2 years and 10 years in prison, respectively, for forcible seizure. Each was fined 10,000 yuan. The third convict, Luo Xianping, got six months' criminal detention for the same crime and was fined 1,000 yuan.

In court, the three defendants, all in their 40s, admitted they had a clear assignment to get the three victims to take out cash and give the money to them "voluntarily."

On January 1, Zhu, Xu and another suspect, who has not been captured, targeted a middle-aged woman and took 4,000 yuan from her on Shixin Road in the Pudong New Area. Zhu walked past the woman and intentionally dropped a wallet beside her. The unidentified suspect then picked up the wallet in front of the woman and invited her to share the money with him after getting into a private car driven by Xu.

While the woman was dividing money with the two suspects, Zhu rushed into the car and claimed the wallet belonged to him, demanding that they return the money and that he had made marks on every note.

The unidentified suspect gave 4,000 yuan to let Zhu "check" and got the woman to do the same. When the "check" was finished, the wallet-picker suggested to her that she get out of the car with him to avoid danger. When the woman got out, he closed the door immediately and the three quickly drove away.

On March 11, Zhu and Xu got more than 4,000 yuan and a bank card with password from another victim surnamed Bao in Pudong via the same means. They withdrew 20,000 yuan with the bank card, the court heard.

At the court, Zhu and Xu argued they didn't rob or seize money from the victims but took the advantage of their greed to get the money.
