Trio jailed for gambling swindle

THREE people have been sentenced to up to 11 1/2 years' jail for a 1.12 million yuan (US$176,256) gambling swindle, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court revealed yesterday.

The accused wore special contact lenses that allowed them to see through the special playing cards that they used for gambling, the court said.

After the two victims discovered the problem with the cards, they rejected the accused's plea and called police.

A man surnamed Chen bought the special lenses and improvised the cards in 2009. He and another man surnamed Shi plotted the scam, inviting the two victims to play Five Card Stud with them. Chen's wife was responsible for dealing the cards, the court said. The accused played with the plaintiffs many times and cheated the duo of a total of 1.12 million yuan.

Chen was jailed for 11 1/2 years while Shi got 10 years in prison.

Chen's wife was sentenced to three years with a four-year probation.
