Truck driver admits crushing victim
A TRUCK driver pleaded guilty in court today to crushing a man to death when the victim stopped him from dumping construction waste unlawfully.
Liu Jiating, a 27-year-old farmer from Anhui Province, was charged with murder because he clearly realized the danger of speeding up his truck while the victim stood on a footplate outside the driver's door.
Prosecutors suggested a sentence above 10 years.
On the evening of January 8, Liu drove a Dongfeng truck to take construction waste from a site on Dongfang Road to a dumping site on Tanglu Road.
When he drove to the intersection of Longdong Avenue and Jinlin Road, Liu saw some workers were clearing dumped construction waste. He asked whether he could dump the waste there.
"I didn't hear quite clearly and I thought they agreed," Liu told Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
Liu then drove on for some 80 meters and mounted the sidewalk. Wang Weigang, the head of the workers, caught up with Liu and threatened to fine him.
"I was afraid to be fined and started the truck quickly, hoping to leave immediately," Liu told the court.
Wang climbed onto the footplate outside the driver's door and asked Liu to stop. But he sped up the truck and Wang fell off, with the 10-ton truck crushing him to death.
Liu didn't stop the truck until two co-workers of the victim called a taxi to catch up with him. He said he didn't feel any jolt even though he said he saw the victim lying on the ground.
The court didn't hand down a verdict after the hearing.
