Tulip planters in big demand at city garden

SHANGHAI Botanical Garden is inviting green-fingered locals to take part in its tulip planting events this weekend and next.

Starting tomorrow — with similar events scheduled for Sunday and both days next weekend — all visitors to the garden in Xuhui District between 9:30am and 3:30pm will be given a free seed ball to plant in one of the designated beds.

Huang Meilin, who works at the garden, said a total of 2,000 balls will be handed out over the course of the four days.

The plot set aside for the project will form part of the displays for next spring’s Shanghai International Flower Show, and by that time should be a sea of colorful tulips, he said.

As well as getting their hands dirty planting seed balls, Huang said he hopes to educate visitors not only about tulips — which are not well known in Shanghai — but also about composting and environmental waste recycling.

“All of the natural waste produced at the garden, such as fallen leaves and grass cuttings, goes to make the compost we use to feed young plants and seedlings,” he said.

“We’re very keen to encourage people to get into composting at home.”

A number of presentations on how to make compost and other horticultural topics will run concurrently with the tulip planting events, Huang said.

The seed balls and talks are included in the regular cost of admission to the garden.
