Typhoon devastates annual peach crop

Peach-growers in the Nanhui area of the city lost between 20 and 30 percent of their annual crop to Typhoon Chan-Hom over the weekend, an industry official said yesterday.

“The huge winds simply blew the fruit off the trees,” said the official, surnamed Huo, from the Pudong New Area Agricultural Commission.

Several small businesses were left counting the cost of Mother Nature’s fury.

“We had to dump nearly two tons of windfall peaches on Sunday,” a man surnamed Zhang who works at the Datuan Peach Orchard told Shanghai Daily.

“The worst of it is that peaches have only one season. A lot of the growers are in tears because they have lost a whole year’s crop,” he said.

The huge dip in supply will likely lead to spike in retail prices, Huo said.

The Nanhui area of Shanghai is well-known for its peach trees, whose fruit is regarded in some quarters as among the best on the market.

“The main supply and best quality peaches will hit the market from tomorrow through July 25,” said Chen Zhigang, who works for local cooperative Xinfeng Milu.

“That’s definitely the best time to buy,” he said.

Chen said that the peak buying time normally falls about August 5, but this year’s crop matured early.

“If people wait until August as they normally would they’ll be left with very little choice. The typhoon wiped out a huge amount of fruit and the cream of the crop will have already gone,” he said.

Peaches were not the only fruit to suffer in the recent stormy weather.

According to the agricultural commission, between 40 and 50 percent of the Cuiguan pears grown in Nanhui ended up on the ground before their time, while numerous greenhouses used for growing grapes were also badly damaged.

It said it was still trying to calculate the economic cost of the bad weather.
