Uber driver tracked down after accident
A driver for the car-hailing service Uber has been tracked down by local authorities on behalf of a passenger who was seriously injured in a collision accident of the car, the city’s traffic enforcement team said yesterday.
The driver, surnamed Li, will face a 10,000-yuan fine and have his driving license suspended for three to six months for driving a commercial vehicle without a license, the authority said.
The passenger, Monica Cao, suffered skull fractures, intracranial hemorrhaging and a concussion in the accident, she told Shanghai Daily, adding that she would sue Li for further compensation.
According to Cao, the car-hailing platform’s insurance covered her 80,000-yuan medical bill.
However, the company failed to contact Li after the traffic accident happened last December, forcing Cao to go to the authorities in the middle of March after she was unable to find him herself.
“He was obviously driving while exhausted because he kept yawning during the trip,” Cao told Shanghai Daily.
Cao’s face hit the back of the front seat when Li’s vehicle rear-ended another car stopped on Huaxia Elevated Highway.
Li was fully responsible for the accident, said police.
Cao said Li made no effort to call an ambulance. “He just got out of the car to argue with the other driver,” she said.
