Ubest milk's sales drop after recall for contamination
SOME stores in Shanghai have stopped selling 950ml Ubest milk cartons after a batch of the locally produced product was contaminated with an alkaline solution.
The product's maker, Bright Dairy & Food Co Ltd, said it has recalled all 950ml Ubest milk produced on Monday, when the batch was contaminated.
A Lianhua chain store on Zhejiang Road M. downtown said it stopped stocking 950ml Ubest milk on Wednesday. An All Days store on Weihai Road said it suspended sales of 950ml cartons of Ubest on Tuesday. Lianhua and All Days are some of the biggest grocery chains in the city.
Bright, a local brand that is one of the biggest dairy manufacturers in the country, said it had recalled all 950ml cartons of Ubest produced on Monday after alkaline water used for pipe-cleaning was mistakenly mixed into the product. It said only 300 cartons were involved.
Customer service complaints
Some consumers who said they had bought the product complained in interviews yesterday about Bright's customer service. Zhou Qi, a local customer who had already finished half the product, said that Bright offers a product exchange but no compensation. She said she found the taste strange.
Zhou bought milk produced at 4:58pm on Monday, but Bright said the contamination had occurred at 5:10pm.
"Customer service staff of Bright told me the product I bought had no problem because only one batch was affected, but mine was just ahead of that contaminated batch," she said. "I was told that I can have it replaced but I had to use the supermarket receipt. Who keeps that receipt after two days?"
The service hotline of Bright closes after 5pm.
Other stores said sales of Ubest milk dropped dramatically yesterday.
Fewer sales but some loyal
A staff member at a Lianhua store on Nandan Road in Xuhui District said the store sells 45 Ubest milk cartons of the 950ml size every day on average, but as of late yesterday afternoon only 15 had been sold. She said a senior asked for a replacement of his 950ml Ubest milk produced on Monday, and she replaced it although it was not the affected batch.
Sales of Ubest milk were strongly affected by the incident, she said.
Another Lianhua store on Yushan Road in the Pudong New Area said over 40 of the 950ml Ubest milk cartons are usually sold in a day, but the figure had dropped by almost 50 percent as of late yesterday.
Quan Chunyan, deputy director of the Dagu Road branch of FamilyMart, said the store usually sells four cartons of 950ml Ubest milk a day, but as of late yesterday afternoon, none had been sold.
Lu Weiyan, a customer living in Hongkou District who buys Ubest milk frequently said she would stop buying the product.
"As the price of Ubest milk is higher than Bright's fresh milk, I buy it as I think it is better. But I will wait and see because of the scandal and eat yogurt as a replacement."
Some said they still trust Bright, a large, established local brand.
"I think it is an event of small probability, and I will still buy it," said Dong Qiqin, who bought Ubest milk at a Hualian chain store on Dagu Road. She said she had been drinking Bright milk since childhood.
