Venerated firm's dried pork found tainted
A type of dried streaky pork produced by the time-honored Shanghai Wanyouquan Food Group was found to contain excessive amounts of acid value, which may cause vomiting and diarrhea, the country's top quality watchdogs said yesterday.
Additionally, a Tianjin-produced smoked head pork was found to contain lean meat powder that has been linked to cancer, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
In the latest inspection carried out by the administration, the Wanyouquan dried pork was found to contain 12 milligrams of acid value per gram, about three times the country standard.
Acid value is an index assessing the quality of fat in meat. High acid value in meat indicates low fat quality. And bad fat will cause disorders of the intestines and stomach, experts explained.
Wanyouquan is a brand with about 160 years' history. Dried and salty meats have been the company's staple since it started business.
In the inspection, the Yingbin smoked head pork produced by Tianjin United Meat Process Co Ltd was found to contain albuterol, a type of chemical that can make the meat leaner. It is banned from food.
Along with clenbuterol, albuterol is one of the most widely yet illegally used lean meat powders and can lead to cancer, heart disease and early puberty.
