Vessels face Huangpu and Yangtze ban
TRAFFIC restrictions in areas of the Huangpu and Yangtze rivers have been put in place by Shanghai maritime officials as part of heightened security for the China International Import Expo.
According to the Shanghai Maritime Bureau, long-distance detectors will be used to identify vessels entering Shanghai ports.
The detectors will be capable of reading information from vessels that have installed the Automatic Identification System.
Vessels without AIS or carrying incomplete or false information will be banned from entering the restricted areas of the Huangpu River and Yangtze River.
Security checks on ships entering or berthing at Shanghai ports began on September 15.
By October 22, about 27,000 ships had been checked. A few of them had been stopped for improper use of the AIS system. The traffic restrictions will last until November 12.
