Warning on faulty car cushions
THE city's consumer rights protection authority warned locals yesterday to watch out for car cushions made of substandard textiles that include discarded fabric and medical waste fibers to avoid health hazards.
The warning came from the Shanghai Commission of Consumers' Rights and Interests Protection after manufacturers in Heilongjiang, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces were found to have produced cushions with industrial waste and medical cotton fibers from family workshops in Hebei and Zhejiang provinces and processed them into "black cotton" to save cost. The cottons were bleached to look like normal cotton.
Cushions made with these materials can lead to risks that are more serious than air pollution inside cars, the commission warned.
People will suffer from coughing, asthma, and serious respiratory diseases after inhaling the dust and bacteria produced by toxic cushions. Benzene produced from bleaching also causes harm to health.
