Waste picker 鈥榢illed 2 men, ate body part鈥

A WASTE picker has been arrested over the murders of two men in separate incidents, Putuo District prosecutors said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Lin, is alleged to have killed a man he befriended earlier this year.

While in custody, he is said to have confessed to have killed another man two years earlier and eaten part of his body.

Lin was held by police after another waste picker, surnamed Cheng, was stabbed to death at a green area on Zhenguang Road on May 19.

Prosecutors said Cheng had been watching a card game when he was stabbed in the neck from behind.

When Cheng fell, Lin stabbed him another seven and eight times before calmly putting the knife in a bag and leaving the scene, according to  prosecutors.

Cheng died at the scene, and Lin was held several hours later at the home he’d built under an elevated road.

Lin is reported to have confessed to police that he killed Cheng because he had stolen money from him.

Prosecutors said Lin and Cheng got to know each other in April through playing cards, and that Cheng would stay at Lin’s home.

Lin said his money went missing every time Cheng left, so he suspected him of stealing from him.

He placed a wallet under his pillow one night and the next day found it under Cheng’s pillow, which made Lin more convinced of Cheng’s guilt, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Lin said that he and Cheng had a special relationship, and that he had provided Cheng with meals and a place to live.

He was so angry that Cheng repaid his kindness with stealing his money that he killed him, prosecutors said.

During the investigation, Lin is said to have also confessed to killing another waste picker in 2012.

Lin is also said to have told prosecutors several men extorted money from him when he was living under a bridge at the Outer Ring Road in 2012.

They threatened to report his illegal dwelling to the government, so Lin gave each of them 50 yuan (US$8).

On October 9, 2012, one of the men returned in a bid to extort more money and took Lin’s bed.

Drunk at the time, Lin killed him, cut off his genitals, cooked and ate them and buried the rest of his body, according to prosecutors.

Police traced the body and confirmed the identity of the victim through a DNA test.

Lin was born in a rural family in the southwestern Guizhou Province. He left his hometown in his 20s and had been a waste picker in Shanghai for more than 10 years.

Under Chinese law, someone convicted of murder can be sentenced to death.
