Water deer to live in Century Park

THE endangered water deer may be seen soon in Shanghai's parks.

Already more than 50 deer are living in a 4,000-square-meter area in Shanghai's Huaxia Park in a pilot project not yet open to the public.

The head of the project says the area should ideally house only 20 to 30 deer "plus many female water deer are already pregnant."

The Green Planning Agency of Pudong New Area is hoping to also raise deer in Century Park and the Binjiang Forest Park.

If everything goes smoothly, people will be able to see the deer in Century Park by July.

Water deer are indigenous to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, including Shanghai, and the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. They are good swimmers.
