Wet market in Hongkou demolished

HONGKOU District government yesterday demolished a 20-year-old wet market because of its poor hygiene and illegal structures that posed safety risks.
Bulldozers tore down Guangyue Road Wet Market, which covered 1,600 square meters and served several residential neighborhoods.
Hongkou government would invest 3 million yuan (US$440,000) to redevelop the area into a new clean and well-managed wet market, a government official added.
The wet market was developed from a temporary market. However, stall owners had built two-story illegal structures to accommodate their families. “They arranged electric wires, cooked and used heaters and electromagnetic ovens inside the illegal buildings, which had great fire risks,” an official with Liangcheng New Community Subdistrict said.
Furthermore, some stall owners had offered poor service to customers and had even threatened some of them, the official added. As a result many residents had chosen to shop at wet markets further afield.
Stall owners had also mishandled market waste and had allowed water to flow unabated. The subdistrict launched a crackdown, backed by Hongkou urban management, police, the market watchdog and fire prevention authorities.
