What goes up must come down
A 20-TON excavator that had been lifted to the top of a 15-floor building in the Pudong New Area was returned to terra firma after local people complained about the potential safety hazard.
The machine was being used by the Chucheng Demolition Co to demolish a disused office building near the intersection of Miaopu and Changyi roads, news website Eastday.com reported yesterday.
Local residents, however, were shocked when they saw a crane lifting the huge piece of equipment into place and aired their concerns online.
After reassessing the situation, the demolition company took the decision to remove the excavator, the report said.
Chucheng planned to use the machine to demolish the building from the top down, which is common practice in China, but later realized it was too heavy for the task and could pose a safety risk, it said. The building, which is being razed to make room for a new cultural and entertainment facility in the area, will now be demolished manually, the company said.
