Wife was slashed over affair suspicions
A MAN who left his wife scarred for life after slashing her face over a suspected affair went on trial yesterday.
At the hearing, Fang Xiaojun, a 32-year-old Jiangsu Province native, pleaded guilty to assault but insisted his wife had betrayed him.
He said he had a record in his hometown in which his wife, Wang Xiangzhu, admitted having an affair.
But Wang, 25, denied any affair. Wang, who was left with scars on both cheeks after the attack, attended the hearing wearing a mask, .
She has spent more than 40,000 yuan (US$6,154) on medical treatment and wants Fang to compensate her. She will undergo further surgery.
"The victim, who used to be a waitress in a local eatery, can't work now due to her disfigured face" said prosecutor Wang Wei.
Wang said she and her husband didn't have a good relationship because Fang didn't work, gambled, and didn't care about his family. She had supported the family, including their three-year-old child, claimed Wang.
Wang had asked for a divorce but her husband refused. Fang suspected she was having an affair, though he had "never seen her lover."
At 4am on January 7, Fang turned up at the Yonghe eatery on Lujiabang Road where his wife worked. When Wang refused to return to Fang's hometown, he produced a knife and slashed her.
"I cut her face because I didn't want her to continue the relationship with that man. I was thinking selfishly," Fang said at the hearing.
Fang fled to Jiangsu and was caught in early February.
The court didn't hand down a verdict as judges were to check the record Fang claimed proved his wife's betrayal.
