‘Woman in white’ suspect is pregnant

THE “woman in white” suspect in a spate of mobile phone and jewelry thefts is three months pregnant, city police said yesterday.

In China, pregnant women held for criminal offences usually receive more lenient treatment.

Officers held 23-year-old Tang Li, from central China’s Hunan Province, on Wednesday, after a video of surveillance camera footage of a string of thefts apparently committed by the same woman in a white dress went viral.

Police said other suspects in the thefts that netted goods worth 100,000 yuan (US$15,690) have fled Shanghai.

“Pregnant criminal suspects are usually given bail if they’re not considered dangerous, and that’s why many theft gangs include pregnant women,” said Shanghai Public Security Bureau police officer Hui Shijun, who was investigating the case.

In an interview with Xinmin Evening News, Tang declined to answer questions about why the suspect in the thefts always wore a white dress.

Police denied allegations by the public that they only made an effort to solve the case after the “lady in white” footage went viral this week.

“Before the post appeared we had already established the identity of six suspects. We were biding our time to catch them all,” Hui said.

The gang is said to have seven or eight members and lodged in Qingpu and Songjiang districts.

Tang has remained silent when questioned about the thefts, police said.
