Woman jailed over surrogacy con game

A WOMAN was sentenced to three and half years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,500) for defrauding women seeking illegal surrogacy services, Yangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.

Yang Ying was also ordered to return the approximately 420,000 yuan she took from her two victims.

Yang was employed by a company providing investment advisory and surrogacy services, but quit in 2011 due to a conflict with management.

However, she maintained contact with two of the firm’s clients, who had authorized the company to find surrogates for them, and pretended she still represented the company.

To convince the two women, surnamed Zhang and Chen, that she was seeking surrogates for them, Yang drew up contracts and provided fake medical examination reports for women she claimed would provide the service.

Zhang paid her more than 170,000 yuan and Chen paid about 250,000 between 2011 and 2012, to cover medical costs, payments to the surrogate mothers and agency fees.

Yang eventually told them that their fetuses had died. But when they tried to get further information she could no longer be contacted.

Chen began to suspect it was a swindle and rushed to the hospital Yang said her surrogate was supposed to give birth at, only to find there was no such patient registered.

The victims reported the matter to police and Yang was later caught at a railway station.
