Woman with dementia back home
AN elderly woman who suffers from dementia was reunited with her family on Monday after unwittingly taking a 300-kilomter bullet train ride to Nanjing, Modern Express reported yesterday.
The 86-year-old, surnamed Chen, is thought to have mistaken the train for her local Metro service, the report said.
Carrying a plastic bag filled with fruit and vegetables, Chen arrived at Nanjing South Station, in the capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province, about 10pm on Sunday.
Officials there asked if she needed assistance, but when she failed to communicate, they looked in her coat pocket and found a card stating that she had dementia, the report said.
The card also had a contact number for her son.
After police spoke to him on the phone they put Chen back on the train to Shanghai.
The woman later told her family that she thought she was getting the subway train home as the person in front of her in the queue reminded her of a neighbor, it said.
Chen’s family had reported her disappearance to local police after she failed to return from a shopping trip, the report said.
