Woman wrongfully labeled a mental patient by hometown security bureau
A WHITE-COLLAR worker in Shanghai was mistakenly recorded as a mental patient by the public security bureau of her hometown city.
The Jiangxi Province native surnamed Qiu works in a dressmaking company. She received a call from a local police station after returning from a bank for personal business on June 1, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Qiu said the officer asked her questions about where she lived and what relatives she had, saying the information was only for route check. Qiu's brother-in-law received a call from police the same day afternoon, suggesting he take better care of Qiu, as Qiu is a mental patient with a propensity for violence.
Qiu and her brother-in-law then went to the Chenjiaqiao police station in Minhang District, and found that Qiu was booked as a mental patient in 2012 by the public security bureau and hospital of her hometown, Shangrao of Jiangxi Province.
Carrying a work attendance record provided by her Shanghai company and a health certificate from the village committee in Shangrao where she grew up, Qiu went to the Shangrao Public Security Bureau for an explanation.
She also made a trip to the Shangrao No. 3 People's Hospital, the hospital which the police record said had marked her as a mental patient. However, no medical record of hers was found at the hospital.
After confirmation, police deleted Qiu's record as a mental patient from their personnel document later in June.
Qiu told the paper that the Shangrao Public Security Bureau called on Sunday to apologize. They told her she was a victim of confusion, as someone with the same name was a mental patient.
Qiu said she had been required by police to provide identity information more often than other people when handling civil affairs like renting a house or applying for a residence certificate.
