Women get 5 months for using child for theft
An unemployed mother who forced her 6-year-old daughter to steal a shop assistant’s iPhone in a shopping mall in Yangpu District was sentenced to five months in detention with a five-month reprieve for theft, the Yangpu District People’s Court announced yesterday.
The court also fined her 1,000 yuan (US$165).
An accomplice who had suggested using the young girl to steal was handed the same penalty by the court.
The 31-year-old mother, surnamed Wu, considered stealing with a friend, surnamed Lin, due to financial problems.
Lin said they could use Wu’s daughter to commit thefts to avoid getting caught, the court heard.
The two women then took Wu’s daughter to a shopping mall in October 2012, and asked her to steal a shop assistant’s iPhone when they tried to distract the woman.
But an alert police officer at the mall sensed it and caught the two in the act.
The court gave the two women a five-month reprieve as both of them were pregnant when they were arrested and presented in the court.
