Women in majority for dating date
SINGLE women may have to fight it out for eligible bachelors at a giant matchmaking event next weekend, as there will be five females for every four males, say organizers.
Around 10,000 singletons are expected to descend on Thames Town in Songjiang District for the event.
Organizers say they have had to stop taking new bookings, as the popularity of the event has exceeded expectations.
"We had to stop registration to prevent any possible chaos," said Zhou Juemin, director of the Shanghai Matchmaking Trade Association, one of the co-organizers.
Participants are required to give detailed personal information - including an income certificate - when registering for the event.
Organizers had expected an even split between men and women, but in the event, ladies would make up the majority.
According to the 2010 population census, the number of unmarried women in Shanghai has been increasing faster than the number of unmarried men for the past decade.
Unmarried women account for near 20 percent of the total female population - up 2.2 percentage points from 2000, while for men the figure is 23.6 percent, up 1 percent.
Organizers say the event is badly needed in Shanghai as people of prime marriage age - especially women with high education backgrounds and good incomes - have trouble finding partners.
Organizers say such women want to find a man with a similar background, narrowing their options.
In addition to the 10,000 men and women looking for love, 4,000 parents will be there to chaperone them.
Parents said they would seize every opportunity to find their offspring a partner.
"I won't place all my hopes on one matchmaking party, but I won't let any opportunity for my daughter go," said Yuan Jian, mother of a 27-year-old woman.
