Writer donation defense

THE secretary of a best-selling Shanghai author yesterday defended him by saying his questioned donation of 200,000 yuan (US$29,300) to Sichuan charities had been sent directly to three schools in the quake-hit areas.

The secretary, Jin Kelin, made the comment to Xinmin.cn after Sichuan Province charity authorities said they had no records of any donation by writer and scholar Yu Qiuyu, who claimed he donated the money to help build libraries in Sichuan's Dujiangyan City, one of the most heavily damaged areas in last year's May 12 earthquake.

The 63-year-old writer claimed that he would give a one-time donation of 200,000 yuan to Sichuan charities.

But Xiao Xialin, an editor at the magazine Beijing Literature, accused Yu of writing empty checks to gain publicity and demanded Yu produce a receipt or other evidence to prove his donation.

Jin told the Shanghai-based Website that the money - Yu's copyright royalties from two works - was sent directly to the schools for their library buildings, which was the reason why charities had no record of the donation.

However, he refused to give the names of the schools.
