Years out-of-date foods discovered
SHANGHAI authorities are testing a popular food - Hsin Tung Yang dried pork floss - after Nanjing authorities disclosed that Hsin Tung Yang Food Co Ltd was processing raw pork material that had been stocked for five years.
The company also tried to sell canned Babaozhou, or eight-treasure congee, a traditional snack made of rice and nuts, that was produced 10 years ago, said the Nanjing Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau.
The bureau said that when officials were inspecting a plant of the Shanghai-based company, they found that workers were changing the production date label on the eight-treasure congee can, from 2001 to 2011.
Officials also found the workers were processing five-year-old salted pork. The finished products were originally planned to be sold to the Hsin Tung Yang noodle restaurant in Shanghai. Yesterday the noodle restaurant on Changshu Road was shut down and staff didn't know when it would reopen.
Officials said such old products should have expired for ages and should have been destroyed.
The Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision yesterday inspected a company warehouse in Shanghai, finding about 10 boxes of dried pork floss. The boxes had labels indicating a production date of September 7 this year, in the same plant exposed by Nanjing authorities. Officials said they would test the products for possible quality problems.
Local hypermarkets said they haven't sold Hsin Tung Yang eight-treasure congee for a long time but that pork floss was still available, although it was mainly produced in Fujian Province.
The company said it once had 10 outlets in Shanghai, but all had closed by the end of this September because of bad management.
