Zhongshan Park takes measures for emergencies

ZHONGSHAN Park, which is open day and night, has put up 18 emergency posts with cameras to handle any unforeseen or sudden occurrence.

The posts have buttons that visitors can press to alert the park’s security guards.

An attached red light and a siren will give away the location of the spot to the guards.

“The park has seven professional security guards, who will patrol the area along with a police dog. A mobile team will also be on standby to handle emergencies,” said Chen Shenhui, deputy general manager of the company that manages the park.

Zhongshan Park in downtown Changning District covers a 200,000-square-meter area. It has over 300 surveillance cameras spread all over.

Chen said while one of the guards keeps a watch on monitors, the others man the three gates. They go for rounds every hour after 6pm.

Over 1,000 people visit the park on average between 9pm and 6am every day, the park management company said.

Most people come between 9pm and 11pm and in the morning between 5am and 6am. The evening visitors are usually night runners or people using the park to cut across streets, the company said. For some homeless people, the park has emerged as a new home. The security guards try to dissuade them from sleeping in the park, citing safety concerns.

Visitors have also complained that garbage pileup had increased since the park started to stay open overnight from last month.

Chen said the park was working with the district government to find a solution to the homeless and garbage problems.
