Zoo offers vivid wildlife to the blind

SHANGHAI Zoo will soon open a nature-experience area for the blind, who will be able to feel the nature, hear the sounds of animals, smell and touch plants and flowers, a zoo official said.

A sound-effect room will simulate vivid natural environment in which blind people will feel themselves surrounded by all kinds of animals.

They can also touch animal specimens to feel their size and shape, make clay animals with a mould and smell the fragrance of different flowers. Volunteers will make explanation and guide them in the area, the official said.

"As far as we know, there are no such facilities for blind people in any Chinese zoo," said Tu Rongxiu, an official with the zoo's science promotion department.

Tu said the area may also open to normal visitors, but they will have to make a reservation ahead of time. The area charges no extra fee.
