SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng met the chairman of Laureus World Sports Academy, Edwin Moses, on Wednesday before the Laureus awards ceremony was held in the city.

Han said sports fans around the world would turn their attention to the ceremony that night. Though it boasts an enormous number of sports enthusiasts, China has a long way to go to become a giant in sports. If that day comes, China is expected to make more contributions to sports.

Han said it was the first time for Shanghai to host the Laureus World Sports Awards event. He believed the event would promote sports development and turn more people, especially young people, into sports fans.

Moses said he was very glad that the event was held in Shanghai. Everyone of his team was full of expectations. Laureus and the Shanghai government had cooperated well to bring the world’s best sportsmen and sportswomen to Shanghai and China. Sports can make the world a better place, he added.

At the awards ceremony, Mayor Yang Xiong made a speech, saying that Shanghai is a city that loves sports and hosts many sports events a year. People doing sports exercise can be seen everywhere. He hoped that the awards ceremony would stimulate more young people to chase their dream for medals and trophies.
