SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng met Mark Weinberger, chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young, and other members of the International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai on November 1. They included Dennis M. Nally, chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers; Jacob Wallenberg, chairman of Investor AB; and Eelco Hoekstra, chairman and CEO of Royal Vopak.

Han said the council has witnessed 20 years of development in Shanghai, which was the fastest in the city’s history. The annual council meeting discussed issues from hardware construction to software development.

The Shanghai government has benefited enormously from the advisory council which has contributed many valuable ideas and suggestions, he said.

The former Shanghai mayor said he hoped the council members will continue to share their insights and experiences with Shanghai leaders at this year’s council meeting which would focus on the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Han said the continuing reform in China will lead to greater opening and industrial restructuring. Shanghai officials are bracing for big challenges ahead. The free trade zone is a testing ground for China’s reform, particularly administrative reform and innovation. Its successful experiences will be introduced nationwide.

Han thanked PriceWaterhouseCooper and two other consulting companies for their assessment reports about the first-year operation of the Shanghai FTZ and attached suggestions for the next step to be taken by the FTZ administrator.

The municipal advisers said the council is a primary channel for international corporations to understand China and Shanghai’s development. The changing topics of the annual council meeting reflected the city’s development trends.

They said they pay close attention to what is happening in the Shanghai FTZ and are closely monitoring China’s reform measures. They are keen to offer suggestions and share their experiences for the development of the FTZ.
