Mayor Yang Xiong meets his Toronto counterpart

MAYOR Yang Xiong met a Canadian delegation led by Toronto Mayor John Tory on Saturday. He said the Sino-Canadian economic ties have been growing steadily and Shanghai is widening cooperation with its sister city of Montreal in Quebec Province.

Yang said many Canadian companies and financial institutions are now operating in Shanghai and more and more Shanghai enterprises are investing in Canada.

He briefed the guests on Shanghai’s economic restructuring and its efforts to become an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping. He said Shanghai is gradually changing from an industrial city into a service city.

The mayor said the Shanghai Free Trade Zone which was founded in 2013 has adopted innovative policies to facilitate investment and trade, reform the financial sector, and further open up the service industry.

He said he hoped Shanghai and Toronto can expand cooperation in areas of urban planning and construction, public transport, higher education, culture, and clean technology.

Tory said he was impressed by Shanghai’s tremendous changes in the past 30 years. Toronto is paying close attention to Shanghai’s economic transformation and is keen to cooperate with Shanghai to develop knowledge economy and tackle common problems in urban development.

Canadian consul general to Shanghai also attended the meeting.
