SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and joined him to unveil the Center for Gandhian and Indian Studies at the city’s Fudan University.

Yang said Shanghai has historical and friendly ties with India and became the sister city of Mumbai last year. The founding of the Gandhian studies center is a new milestone in the development of bilateral relationship. He hoped the center would promote cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between the two peoples.

The mayor said Shanghai is keen to expand cooperation with India in economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education, urban construction and management, and environment protection.

Modi said he felt tremendous changes in Shanghai on this trip. Shanghai is a world-class city and a development model for the rest of the world. India can learn from Shanghai’s successful experiences in urbanization.

Chinese Minister of Human Resources and Social Security Yin Weimin, Chinese Ambassador to India Le Yucheng, Fudan University Party Secretary Zhu Zhiwen, Fudan University President Xu Ningsheng, and Indian Ambassador to China Ashok K. Kantha joined the meeting.
