Mayor meets International Maritime Organization officials
亚洲海事技术合作中心落沪 应勇会见国际海事组织秘书长

SHANGHAI Mayor Ying Yong met Kitack Lim, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, on Monday.

Lim is leading a delegation to attend the opening ceremony of the Maritime Technical Cooperation Center for Asia and an international forum at the Shanghai Maritime University.

Ying said Shanghai is working hard to become an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping by 2020, achieve core functions of a global innovation center by 2030, and develop into a global metropolis by 2040.

“Shanghai’s efforts to become an international shipping center went smoothly. The city has been the biggest container port in the world for many years,” he said, adding that Shanghai’s air transport topped 100 million passengers last year.

The mayor spoke highly of the IMO’s decision to put the technical cooperation center in Shanghai. The municipal government will support the center’s construction and strengthen its cooperation with the IMO.

He welcomed more international organizations like the IMO to establish offices and facilities in the city.

Lim said Shanghai has become a world-class shipping center in both hardware and software. The IMO is keen to expand cooperation with Shanghai.

The London-based IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, responsible for regulating shipping and handling other maritime affairs.
