Mayor meets Lloyd’s of London chairman

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met John Nelson, chairman of Lloyd’s, the world’s specialist insurance market, on Tuesday.
Yang said that 2016 is the starting year of the city’s 13th Five-Year Plan and a crucial year for the development of Shanghai Free Trade Zone and for the city’s drive to become an international financial and shipping center.
He said Shanghai is keen to cooperate with all parties to address challenges from the global economic downturn.
The mayor said Shanghai’s insurance industry enjoyed healthy development in recent years. The city made effective use of insurance tools to control financial risks in construction, agricultural and other projects.
He said Chinese and foreign insurance companies should carry out innovation and provide more insurance products in the city.
Yang mentioned the 40 Measures of Financial Reform adopted by Shanghai Free Trade Zone and the planned Shanghai Insurance Exchange to improve business environment for insurance companies.
He said Shanghai wants to enhance cooperation with Lloyd’s and other British companies and welcome them to share their experiences and expertise and participate in the city’s effort to become an international center.
Nelson said Lloyd’s is focused on providing special insurance and re-insurance services in major economies, including China. Shanghai’s sound business environment enabled Lloyd’s to grow business fast.
He added that Lloyd’s will increase cooperation with Shanghai insurance companies and play a part in the city’s transformation into an international financial center and in the establishment of Shanghai Insurance Exchange.
Lloyd’s is headquartered in London with a history of more than 300 years. It is the biggest insurance organization in Britain with a focus on specialist insurance and reinsurance.
