SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Irish President Michael Higgins and his wife last Friday and said China and Ireland enjoyed growing relationship and cooperation in recent years and forged strategic partnership which laid a good foundation for Shanghai’s exchanges with Ireland.

He noted that Irish playwright Bernard Shaw visited Shanghai in the 1930s and it was the talk of the town for a long time.

Yang said Shanghai and Cork City of Ireland cooperated broadly in trade, education, culture and civil servants training after the two cities became sister cities.

The mayor said Shanghai is striving to become an international economic, financial, trade and shipping center and a global innovation center. Shanghai wants to learn from Ireland in developing IT and pharmaceutical industries and in food safety management.

Yang said Shanghai is an open port and is opening further up. Irish companies are welcome to invest in Shanghai. At the same time, Shanghai enterprises are encouraged to invest in Ireland.

He said the president’s visit will deepen bilateral cooperation in education, culture, manufacturing, science and technology.

Higgins said Ireland and China enjoy an enduring friendship and he believed that China’s development can contribute more to the world.

He spoke highly of Shanghai’s cultural heritage, dynamic skyline and its role as a pioneer in China’s economic development. Ireland is keen to deepen cooperation with Shanghai and tackle future challenges together.

Chinese Ambassador to Ireland Xu Jianguo, Irish Ambassador to China Paul Kavanagh, and Irish Consul General in Shanghai Austin Gormley were present at the meeting.
