SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met a delegation of the Committee of 100 Extraordinary Chinese Americans led by its chairman Herman Li last week.
Yang thanked the organization for their long-term effort to promote Sino-US relationship and mutual understanding and for their support to the city of Shanghai. He also praised them for establishing a scholarship for Chinese college students.
The mayor noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping recently visited the United States. The leaders of two countries reached many agreements, which will exert influence on China-US relations.
He said Shanghai is pursuing innovation-driven economic development and is experimenting reforms in Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The city is striving to transform itself into a global innovation center in addition to becoming an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping. Its objectives provide more space for Sino-US cooperation.
Yang said he hoped the Committee of 100 can play a bigger role in Shanghai’s development and offer advice for the drafting of Shanghai’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).
Li and other members of the delegation said Shanghai plays an important role in China-US relationship. Many members were born here and feel attached to this city. They pledged to use their expertise to boost bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, culture, and science and technology.
The Committee of 100 was founded in the United States in 1989. Its eminent members include architect Ieoh Ming Pei and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
