SOUTH Korean President Park Geun-hye and Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong attended a ceremony on Friday for the reopening of a historical building in downtown Shanghai that once housed the provisional government of the Republic of Korea during Japan’s occupation of the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking at the ceremony, Yang said this year marked the 70th anniversary of China’s victory in its war against Japanese invaders and Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Both countries remember their sufferings and sacrifices and are looking forward to the future.
He said Shanghai has a historical link with Korea. The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea led the independence movement on the peninsula while in exile in China for 27 years, half of time in Shanghai.
Yang said the ROK Provisional Government Building in Shanghai witnessed the solidarity of our two peoples to fight for freedom from Japanese occupation. This chapter of history becomes the shared memory of our two nations, adding that the ceremony was to retrospect history, instill the spirit of patriotism, and build faith in a future of peace.
The mayor pledged that Shanghai will continue to protect the provisional government building and conduct maintenance work in cooperation with South Korean experts.
Park thanked the Chinese government for preserving the historical building and said the ceremony was a fitting occasion to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Korea’s independence from Japanese colonial rule.
She said she hoped the historic site will carry on the patriotic spirit of her country’s independence fighters and inspire the national pride of every Korean.
After the ceremony, Yang accompanied the president to tour the building. Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Qiu Guohong also attended the ceremony.
