Shanghai holds exhibition on reform and opening
韩正杨雄参观改革开放回顾与展望展 展览向公众免费展出
SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng and Mayor Yang Xiong attended the opening of an exhibition on the city’s reform and opening since 1979. The show opened on September 29 at Shanghai Exhibition Center and is open to the public for free until October 20.
Other city officials Yin Yicui, Wu Zhiming and Ying Yong also joined the first group of visitors to see the show.
Two round TV screens erected in the open square of the exhibition center show panoramic views of the Huangpu River and ships shuttling on the river lined with skyscrapers. The scenario illustrates a dynamic city that has changed and prospered because of reform and opening. Many people posed for pictures before the two screens.
Photos, videos and artifacts document Shanghai’s changes over the past 35 years and local people’s contribution to the city’s development. Visitors often paused to take a close look at some exhibits. Some visitors used their smart phones to take pictures of certain items.
The exhibition has six parts arranged in chronological order -- from the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in 1979 to the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee this year.
It uses pictures to show how Pudong’s Lujiazui area transformed from a rural backwater into a modern metropolitan area full of high-rises. It also shows that the per capita green space of local urban residents has increased from the size of two shoes to the size of a bed and now to the size of a room.
Viewers also see the evidence of rising family income, improved social welfare program, the adoption of value-added tax, the creation of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, the introduction of a negative list for foreign investment, and the reform of the college entrance examination system.
The exhibition also presents some scientific achievements that have never been shown to the public before, such as a remote-control submersible that can go to a depth of 4,500 meters, models of moon rovers, and heat-resistant superconductors.
The show is organized by the publicity and organization departments of the CPC Shanghai Committee, Shanghai Archives, and the Municipal Government’s Development and Research Center. It opens to the public for free from 9am to 4:30pm every day until October 20. Visitors can enter Shanghai Exhibition Center via gates at 1333 Nanjing Road W. and 1000 Yan’an Road M.
