Yang Xiong meets ATP boss ahead of Shanghai tournament

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Chris Kermode, executive chairman and president of ATP, the governing body of professional tennis tournaments. Yang welcomed Kermode’s first visit to the city after taking the position.
Kermode was in Shanghai to check the city’s preparations for Shanghai Rolex Masters, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Yang said Shanghai has cooperated with ATP for more than 20 years. The annual event has made positive contribution to the development of tennis sports in Shanghai and China.
The mayor said the city is building more sports venues for the public, including tennis courts and is devoting resources to the training of local tennis players. He said Shanghai hopes to deepen cooperation with ATP to make the Shanghai ATP Masters tournament more influential in the world.
Kermode thanked Shanghai for supporting ATP and said the Shanghai tournament was voted the best ATP event by professional tennis players.
Kermode said his association will continue to work with Shanghai in holding the tournament, training Chinese tennis players, and promoting the sports in China.
The ATP Shanghai tournament is hosted by the General Administration of Sports of China and the Shanghai Municipal Government. The event takes place in October every year and is the most important tennis tournament in Asia.
