Yang Xiong meets his counterpart from Cork, Ireland
深化友城合作促共同发展 杨雄会见爱尔兰科克市市长

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong received a delegation from the city of Cork in Ireland, led by Lord Mayor Chris O'Leary, last week.

Yang said this year marks the 10th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Shanghai and Cork. The two cities enjoyed fruitful cooperation in the exchange and training of public servants as well as culture and education.

Yang remarked on the similarities of both cities and said he hopes Shanghai and Cork can expand cooperation for mutual development.

Shanghai Free Trade Zone is a testing ground for China’s new reforms and opening. Shanghai has adopted innovative policies to facilitate foreign investment and trade and to further open the financial sector. Shanghai also learned a lot from the customs practices of Shannon International Airport in Ireland, Yang said.

He said Shanghai is accelerating its transformation into a global innovation center by pushing cooperation among universities, research institutes and companies. Shanghai wants to bring cooperation with Cork up a level.

O'Leary said he was glad to see previous efforts for exchange and cooperation have paid off and he wished his visit would further promote the ties between the governments and enterprises of both cities with more cooperation in culture, education and tourism.
