SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met with Springer Nature CEO Derk Haank on Monday and congratulated him for signing a cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission.

Yang said Shanghai is striving to become a global innovation center. Springer Nature has come at the right time.

As Shanghai is transforming into an innovation-driven economy, science and technology will become the main driving force of the city’s social and economic development, the mayor remarked.

He said Shanghai has many universities, research institutes and talented professionals. The Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the National Center for Protein Science are among leading research bodies to promote innovation in Shanghai.

Yang noted that Springer owns The Nature and other world-famous science journals. The publishing group can help Shanghai keep track of new developments in frontier science and introduce Shanghai’s scientific achievements to the world, thus involving more Chinese scientists in international exchange and cooperation.

Haank said Springer Nature not only tracks scientific and technological development worldwide, but also encourage researchers to move into new frontiers. The group pays close attention to Shanghai’s effort to transform into a global innovation center and wants to make contributions to help the city realize its goal and boost international exchange and cooperation.
