SHANGHAI Mayor Ying Yong met Elisabeth Ackermann, visiting president of Basel-City of Switzerland, last Saturday.

Ying said China and Switzerland have provided a role model in friendly cooperation between countries of different political systems, different levels of development and different sizes.

He said the two countries have established strategic partnership which gives Shanghai and Basel-City vast space for cooperation and exchanges.

Shanghai and Basel-City became sister cities in 2007 and have enjoyed frequent exchanges and cooperation in the past 10 years, the mayor added.

Ying said Shanghai is speeding up its transformation into a global innovation center while Basel-City is the most dynamic and innovative place in Switzerland. The two cities should strengthen cooperation in life science, chemical industry, tourism, culture and education.

Ackermann said the two sister cities have cooperated fruitfully in areas of economy, trade, science and technology and education. They should further expand bilateral cooperation.

Alexander Hoffet, Swiss consul general in Shanghai, joined the meeting.

In a separate meeting on Saturday, Wu Zhiming, chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee, talked with Elisabeth Ackermann and her delegation and explained the functions of the CPPCC, China’s political advisory body, to the Swiss guests.

He said Shanghai and Basel-City are marking the 10th anniversary of their sister-city relationship. Shanghai hopes to strengthen its cooperation with Basel-City in urban management, biomedicine and culture.

Ackermann said she will use this trip to promote friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two cities.
