1 dead, 15 missing as storm batters southwest China
One person was confirmed dead and 15 others missing in southwest China's Sichuan Province as of last night after severe rainstorms battered the region, including some quake-stricken areas, local authorities said.
In Qingchuan County, rain-triggered landslides caused one death and affected the lives of 7,051 people, Xinhua news agency reported.
Five vehicles plunged into a river in the province when a bridge collapsed yesterday morning.
Three people were rescued, officials said, and were in a stable condition in hospital. Six people are still missing.
Witnesses said cars, a truck and several pedestrians were on the bridge over the Panjiang River in Jiangyou City when it collapsed at around 11:30am.
More than 2,000 people were dispatched to search for the missing downstream.
The 200-meter-bridge, built in 1967, had been repaired and fortified after the devastating earthquake of 2008 in the province. Three bridges have now collapsed since Monday due to flooding in the cities of Jiangyou and Deyang.
In Ya'an, which was shaken by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in April, flooding has affected at least 16,900 people.
Heavy rain started to batter Ya'an from Monday, resulting in floods in three townships. Economic losses are estimated at 768 million yuan (US$125 million), Xinhua said.
Local governments have relocated more than 5,200 residents and tourists.
Downpours submerged quake-razed ruins in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, where the 2008 earthquake left 20,000 people dead or missing. More than 300 millimeters of rain has been recorded.
More than 42,000 people in Beichuan had been affected by the storm. Floods also caused a landslide in the village of Shilibei, as well as cutting telecommunications and access to roads in many townships.
The Beichuan county government has relocated 2,019 residents as a precaution.
At Shuangliu International Airport in the provincial capital of Chengdu, 4,000 passengers were stranded as more than 23 inbound and outbound flights were hit by the weather. The storm also caused trains running on the Baoji-Chengdu railway to be delayed or rerouted.
The Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Center warned of more torrential rain and thunder expected in Chengdu, Ya'an and Deyang.
In neighboring Gansu Province, three villagers remain missing after falling into raging floodwaters on Monday evening. Search and rescue efforts are under way.
China's Central Meteorological Station issued a yellow alert for rainstorms with the storm expected to affect southwest Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, northwest Gansu and Shaanxi provinces, northeast Liaoning and Jilin provinces, and coastal regions in southern China.
