1 dead, 39 hurt in bus crash on Taihu Bridge

ONE person was killed and another 39 injured yesterday when two buses, from Shanghai and Suzhou, collided on Taihu Bridge in east China’s Jiangsu Province.

The Shanghai bus had more than 40 tourists on board when the accident happened.

One of the injured is in a serious condition at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou Television Station reported.

The other 38 were taken to Mudu People’s Hospital in Suzhou, where one is in a critical condition.

Eight of the injured have been released from hospital, while the others, suffering from fractures and skin injuries, remained under observation.

The tourists from Shanghai had been returning from a trip to Jinting Ancient Town in Suzhou organized by their company, according to the television station.

A witness said the Suzhou No. 58 bus veered from its lane and collided head-on with the Shanghai bus.

The bridge was closed by police for a time after the accident.
