1 dead, 7 missing as cargo ship sinks off Zhoushan
ONE person died and seven others are missing when a Chinese cargo ship sank in the East China Sea off an island near Zhoushan, eastern Zhejiang Province this morning, according to local maritime authorities.
Thirty-two people were brought to safety after the accident but one was announced dead in a hospital. Seven others are still missing, the Zhoushan Maritime Safety Administration said.
The shipwreck happened around 6am when a large freighter named Yuan Tong, which belonged to the Nanjing Ocean Shipping Co Ltd, was being towed by two tugboats into a dry dock on the Liuheng Island.
It is reported that the bow of the ship suddenly went down into the water and the whole ship submerged around 6:30am, the administration said.
The ship had cargos but 40 people aboard, including the crew and their families.
