1 killed, 35 injured when bus plunges into river

A speeding, overloaded bus plunged into a river in Shaanxi Province in northwest China yesterday morning, killing one person and injuring 35 with 14 in critical condition, Xi'an Evening News reported today.

Traffic police in Yanchuan County said they had detained the driver Feng Hongwei and initial investigation showed the bus was overloaded and driving at an illegal speed when the accident happened at 7:05am yesterday on Highway 210 in the county.

Bai Fengxiang, a villager who witnessed the accident, said the bus firstly hit a tree on the right side of the road, then swerved to the left, smashed through the barrier and fell into the river. "Maybe the driver overacted after hitting the tree and turned the steering wheel too much," Bai said.

The seriously wounded passengers were rushed to the hospital immediately and police were investigating the cause of this mishap, the paper reported.
