1 killed, 4 injured as bridge collapse tips trucks into river

ONE person was killed and four others were injured yesterday when a bridge collapsed in Heyuan, south China’s Guangdong Province.

The incident happened as four heavy trucks were crossing the bridge about 3:40am, the city’s publicity office said.

The vehicles’ combined weight was too much for the structure to take, the office said in a statement.

Ao Daochao, an engineer with Guangdong Highway Co, was quoted by China News Service as saying that the bridge was designed to support about 95 tons distributed across its entire span.

At the time of the collapse there were four trucks on the bridge, each of which was carrying a load of at least 100 tons, he said.

The four people injured were all traveling inside the trucks at the time of the collapse, the report said.

Yi Jinsong, who was driving the first of the vehicles, suffered only minor injuries when his truck fell.

He was quoted as saying that all four trucks were carrying porcelain clay to Heyuan from Huizhou, also in Guangdong.

His co-driver, who was not named, escaped unhurt after leaping from the window of the truck as it began to fall, the report said.

The three others injured were named as Zhong Wanrong, Xi Guibin and Gan Chaoyi, all of whom suffered severe back injuries and are being treated at Heyuan Tongji Hospital, it said.

The report provided no details of the person killed in the collapse.

A man surnamed Chen who lives about 50 meters from the bridge said he was in bed with his wife at the time of the incident.

“We were woken up by a huge bang,” he was quoted as saying.

“When I saw what had happened I ran to the edge of the bridge with a flashlight and tried to signal to other vehicles to stop,” he said.

The 130-meter-long bridge opened in December 2005 and forms part of a highway connecting Guangdong with east China’s Jiangxi Province, the report said.
