1 missing, 61 saved after torrents sweep Xinjiang construction site

ONE person was missing and 61 others were saved after mountain torrents swept a construction site in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region yesterday, the local government said today.

The accident happened at around 6pm, when floods trapped 62 people at the construction site near a hydropower station in Hejing County of the Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Bayingolin, the prefecture government said in a press release.

As of midnight, rescuers saved 61 people, including 59 adults and two children, it said.

The only person that remained missing is an excavator driver at the construction site.

The survivors were evacuated to safety early today and rescuers are still searching for the missing.
