1 to 23: chances getting slimmer for Beijing car plate

OPPORTUNITIES are dwindling for car license plate applicants who attend Beijing's monthly license plate lottery.

Beijing conducted its third license plate lottery today. The lottery, which is designed to curb the capital city's chronic grid lock, concluded with 17,600 applicants being granted plates, according to a spokesman from the municipal transport commission.

The lottery had received nearly 400,000 applicants by March 8, including those who weren't lucky enough to receive a plate in previous lotteries in January and February, the spokesman said.

That meant approximately one in 23 applicants were able to get a license plate, which is required for automobile purchases, he added.

Applicants who failed in previous lotteries were automatically added to the lottery pool for today.

Chances of winning a license were one in 17 in February and one in 11 in January, according to the transport commission.

Beijing introduced the lottery in January this year to limit the city's number of cars, with the ultimate goal of reducing traffic jams in the city.

Only 240,000 new plates will be issued in total this year, about a third of the number of cars registered in Beijing in 2010.
