10 dead as Shanghai bus hits truck in Anhui Province
A SHANGHAI passenger bus hit the back of a truck loaded with construction materials early this morning in east China’s Anhui Province, killing 10 people and injuring 34, according to Xinhua news agency.
The 53-seater long-haul bus ran into the truck about 3:45am on an expressway in Anhui.
Eight people on the bus died at the scene. At least 3 of the injured were in critical condition.
An initial investigation showed the bus had left Shanghai for Yingshang, a county in Anhui Province. The truck was heavily loaded with floor tiles, which covered passengers in the front rows of the bus after the collision.
Rescuers pulled out all the trapped passengers.
Police said the coach was traveling illegally. Since last year, coaches are not allowed to provide long-distance passenger services on expressways between 2 and 5 am to prevent severe road accidents.
It was still unclear this afternoon whether any Shanghai residents were among the casualties.
