10 men appeal over fatal beating

TEN Hunan Province men appealed against sentences ranging from 6 years in jail to death for beating to death a man they thought was a thief in central China's Hubei Province.

Hubei Higher People's Court held a second hearing for the case yesterday in Wuhan City, today's Chu Tian Metropolis Daily newspaper reported.

A store owner surnamed Liu saw a man surnamed Cai in his 50s wandering near his store on October 20, 2008 and thought he was behind a spate of robberies in Wuhan's Hongshan District.

He caught Cai and beat him up, attracting other shopkeepers to join the attack. Liu then handed Cai to another man surnamed Zuo, who asked other people to beat the man. Cai died after two hours of violence, the report said.

Police caught 10 attackers by the end of the month. Zuo was sentenced to death in a first trial early this year by Wuhan Intermediate People's Court and the rest were jailed from 6 to 12 years. They were ordered to pay 230,000 yuan (US$33,925) in compensation to Cai's family.
